Womens Friendship Month
We at Gilda's Club North Texas are celebrating National Women's Friendship Day on Saturday, September 20, 12-3PM. Participants will enjoy a delicious lunch, hear a presentation on nutritious food, do an art workshop together, and watch a make-up demonstration -- a real girls' day out.

Here's another way to celebrate -- have a "Dame Game" night. My sister and I recently developed a party game just for females (17+). It's a great way to connect and laugh the night away with your best gal pals; also a great icebreaker when there are new "dames" in the mix! Check out Games for Dames.

Ideas for Women's Groups & Organizations

Books, magazines, television - everywhere we look we find stories about women friends. The media is just getting around to acknowledging what we've known all along. Those of us involved in women's groups understand the importance of women friends. Women friends have joined forces to create and run some of the most effective organizations in our country, from child advocacy groups to environmental organizations, from women's business associations to battered women's shelters. The power of women's friendship is amazing!

We encourage you to join the celebration! National Women's Friendship Month is a great way to promote your causes or issues. Consider planning a special campaign or event for National Women's Friendship Month each year in Septebmer. Below are some ideas.

  • Plan a luncheon for women in your organization. Ask each person to bring a friend. Consider featuring a woman speaker on "Women and Economic Empowerment" or another topic of interest. Provide entertainment by women musicians.

  • Run a "Best Woman Friend" contest the month of September asking members to nominate their friends. The winner could receive a gift certificate or another appropriate gift. Plan a special presentation to get media attention.

  • Plan your organization's annual fund around a National Women's Friendship Month theme.

  • Plan a fundraiser for a local women's charity. Organize a community fashion show or a silent auction.

  • Plan a day-long workshop on topics of interest to women. Invite local vendors that provide services and/or products for women. Use the proceeds to fund a new program for your organization.

  • Send a press release to local media. Highlight the role women's friendship played in your organization's founding. Refer to National Women's Friendship Month for a timely story angle.

  • Give a yellow rose, the symbol of friendship, to each of your female volunteers or employees.

  • When sending out reminders for an upcoming meeting, encourage women to bring toiletry items to donate to a battered women's shelter. Or, ask members to bring a suit they no longer wear to donate to Dress for Success, a nonprofit organization that provides business attire to low-income women entering the workplace.

  • Coordinate with your local hospital to have a mobile mammogram unit visit your group. Ask those who participate to donate a small amount to an organization fighting breast cancer.

  • Organize a book club with members of your women's group. Focus on a book by a female author. Plan a book reading by a local female author. Give the National Women's Friendship Month bookmark to those who participate.

  • Find an interior designer to lead a discussion on popular colors, fabrics and patterns. Ask a local home décor store to provide coupons for a discount on purchases for those who attend.

  • Plan a getaway with members of your group - go to the theatre, the beach, whitewater rafting, hiking, etc.

  • Organize a scrapbooking day or a paint-your-own-pottery event.

  • Plan a Bible study on women in the Bible. Visit women shut-ins from your church.

  • Send postcards to all your members wishing them a happy National Women's Friendship Month.

  • When planning an event, consider providing day care services for mothers who would like to attend. Older Girl Scouts may be looking for service hours in your community.
  • Post a National Women's Friendship Month greeting on your bulletin board and Web site. Announce the holiday on your sign or marquee.

  • Include a feature article on women's friendship in your organization's newsletter.
